The company employs over more than 19,000 associates from more than 200 grocery stores and more than a hundred of in-store pharmacies from the southeastern states of North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia. At Bi-Lo they apply the highest standard to all their products from premium-grade meats, best quality produce, baked good fresh everyday from the purest ingredients. Or they will double back your money if you are not satisfied with any item from any Bi-Lo store. As part of the company’s charitable contributions they built Bi-Lo Charities Inc., a charitable organization that partner with nonprofit organizations throughout the Southeast to help improve education, feed the hungry and build up the lives of the children. The company also supports environmental awareness by their eco-friendly efforts through reusable shopping bags and use of 100% recycled paper and partially recycled plastic to use as free shopping bags.
History
Bi-Lo was founded by Mr. Frank Outlaw in 1961, when he purchased a small chain of food stores with only one vision and that is to create a supermarket where customers can buy for national brands for less. The company’s original name was Wrenn & Outlaw and was changed to Bi-Lo in 1963. Outlaw organized an employee store-naming contest for the development of the brand and his secretary won the contest by submitting the name “Bi-Lo.”
In 1977, Bi-Lo was sold to Ahold, a Dutch international retailer. Ahold purchased Red Food Stores, Inc. in 1994 and team up its location in Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee into Bi-Lo the following year. In 2001, Ahold purchased Bruno’s Supermarket chains in Alabama and later combined with Bi-Lo. Bi-Lo introduced the Bonuscard, which help the shoppers saved for more than billion on groceries. Bi-Lo invested for the renovation and redesigning of its store layout in 2003. And resulted to a larger store layout that features a wider selection of healthy foods. In 2011, Bi-Lo and Winn-Dixie, an American supermarket chain based in Florida, merge to create a stronger organization throughout the southeastern United States. In 2013, Bi-Lo acquired the Harveys, Sweetbay and Reid’s banners from Delhaize Group. In the same year, Bi-Lo disclosed an agreement to buy 22 supermarkets from Piggly Wiggly Carolina Co. The company is proud to continue Mr. Frank Outlaw’s simple vision and that they will take it over into the 21st century.
