History

Ross stores were first opened in Pacifica, California in 1950 by Morris Ross. He would normally work for 85 hours a week doing all the stuff in buying and bookkeeping for his department store. He sold his store to become a residential and commercial real estate developer in 1958. By 1982, Mervin Morris, founder of the Mervyns department stores together with a group of investors, they purchased six Ross Department Stores in San Francisco. And within three years it was expanded to 107 stores under Stuart Moldaw and Don Rowlett leadership. These two retail veterans had a vision of creating a powerful off-price retail chain in all areas. In early 1984, the company’s corporate headquarters was moved in Newark, California that also served as their distribution center. In 1989, the company ranked as the third-largest off-price retailer in the country and went a long way to achieve their ambitious goal. By the end of 1995, the chain reached with 292 stores in 18 states and by 2012 reached with 1,091 stores in 33 states with an additional 108 for dd’d Discount in 8 states. As the company progressed, they gained new management under Michael Balmuth, who was selected as the chief executive officer.
