The Target Corporation which was originally the Dayton Dry Goods Company and later the Dayton Hudson Corporation was founded by George Draper Dayton in 1902. Southdale Center, a two-level shopping center was opened by the Dayton Company in Minneapolis in 1956. Since there was only 113 good shopping days in a year in Minneapolis, the engineer decided to construct the shopping mall under a cover. Thus Southdale Center became the world’s first fully enclosed shopping mall.

During 1962 the Dayton Company, using the concept of upscale discount retailing developed by Dayton’s publicity director, Stewart K. Widdess opened its first Target discount store at Roseville, Minnesota. The name “Target” was planned to prevent consumers from linking the new discount store chain with the Dayton’s department store. Currently target has over 1,700 stores all over the world.
