History

Mr. Dave Thomas opened the first Wendy’s restaurant in Columbus, Ohio in 1969. The fast-food chain is known for its square hamburgers, sea salt fries and frosty. Dave Thomas was inspired by his trip to Kewpee Hamburgers located along his home town in Kalamazoo. Michigan. Kewpee Hamburgers sold square hamburgers and shakes where Dave Thomas got the idea for his well-known restaurant. Thomas opened his second restaurant in Columbus in 1969 just within a year after opening his first restaurant. He then featured the first modern-day drive-thru window of his restaurant which he added in 1971. Dave Thomas named the restaurant after his fourth child, Melinda Lou “Wendy” Thomas. In 1979, Wendy’s was the first fast food chain to offer the salad bar. Wendy’s develop its bar which was called Superbar and had various stations. It became popular, but difficult to maintain so it was discontinued in 1998. Wendy’s launched its new breakfast menu in its United States and Canadian stores in 2007 but became unsuccessful due to many issues. By 2012, Wendy’s ranked no. 1 for speed of service and sold more than a million salads in the U.S. and thus named as Best Salads in ZAGAT’s 2012 Annual Food Survey. The company believes in giving back to the community as part of what Dave Thomas had been established. By 2010, Wendy’s established Community Ambassador Grant Program, which supported extraordinary volunteer efforts by their corporate and field employees. As part of the company’s environmental awareness, they are a long time member and support the U.S. Green Building Council.
